Bush Dolichos beans for round the year Cultivation

Dolichos beans are liked by everybody. It is a choice vegetable. Local tasty beans are photosensitive and climbing types, requiring huge amounts on cost of cultivation to provide support and their fruiting period is only for 3-4 months (January – April). Bush beans developed such as “Arka Jaya” are not of good quality (Even Arka Jaya was developed by Dr. Alapati Satyanarayana by pedigree method, while working at IIHR, Bagalore, 1981.

Kanupuchikkudu, a local variety is liked for its quality pods. But it is photoinsensitive and climbing type. Using Kanupuchikkudu as recurring parent and Arka Jaya as donor parent, two bush and photosensitive varieties ‘Pavan’ and Ganesh have been developed through back cross method of breeding. They are unique for quality, yield and profitability.

Market & consumer preferences are very good for these varieties. Farmers are realizing 1.5 to 2.0 lakh rupees per acre in 120 – 130 days.
